A student’s perspective - Sean’s story

From the very beginning Stand Easy has always worked with student volunteers, students from Dundee & Angus and Edinburgh colleges can gain unique and vital work experience by volunteering on one of our projects as part of their course. Not only does this enrich the students’ learning it also enriches our work. By bringing in young people, often with no connection to the military world, we are beginning to challenge and break down the “us and them” mentality which can so often hold veterans back. Student volunteers form a crucial part of our company model, many of our professional artists started with us as student volunteers.

Coming into this project I had no clue what to expect. I knew coming in to this new environment that I had to be open and welcoming to others and be professional. After meeting these wonderful group of people I quickly felt a part of the team.

The banter and jokes where a crucial part of my day and this group always gave the best in comedy. The group was more than professional and had amazing ideas that inspired my creativity. No matter what the topic the group always had a creative outlook towards the subject.

My expectations where blown away and the experience made me realise how important these kind of charities are for veterans and members of the emergency services. My father was a veteran so I could appreciate first hand the benefits this project has for individuals and families. There where bad days and good days but we spoke to each other as a family and were always there for one another. I cannot thank Stand Easy enough for giving me the experience and skills to further my career.

Thank you all again.
